Each year, 100s gather high atop Peel Chestnut Mountain at the Synan Homeplace for the Peel Chestnut Mountain July 4th Celebration.

They come to celebrate the Nation’s birthday of course, but it is also a time to celebrate our Veterans and all of their contributions both large and small.

Folks come from all over for the music, games, hayrides, good food, and of course, the fireworks. But then again, some might just come for those world-famous fried bologna sandwiches.

Whatever the reason they come, come they do. By the hundreds. To enjoy the friendship and fellowship of the Peel Chestnut Mountain July 4th Celebration.

Pumpkin Festival https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/pumpkin-festival/ https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/pumpkin-festival/#respond Fri, 01 Oct 2021 08:29:38 +0000 https://ethanshew.com/?p=2280

The Pumpkin Festival began on Russell and Pat Synan’s homeplace. What started as a small gathering grew into a larger regional event. After Russell’s passing, it was moved to the town of Pocahontas. The following was written while the festival was still being held at the Synan Homeplace on Peel Chestnut Mountain.

Each year, when the air starts to cool and the leaves begin to fall, Peel Chestnut Mountain is invaded by Giant Pumpkins!

It’s the Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival and it takes place every year on the 2nd Saturday in October at the Synan Homeplace.

Hundreds, even thousands of folks come from all over for the music, food, fun, hayrides, games, apple butter, and pumpkins. Lots and lots of pumpkins. There’s something to do for everyone! And let’s not forget those world-famous fried bologna sandwiches!

Folks who grew up here and have moved away plan their visits home around this event. Classes from Pocahontas High School plan their reunions around this event. The Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival draws people from all over the country.

So plan on joining Russell and Pat Synan at the Synan Homeplace for the next Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival. The memories that you take away will last a lifetime.

As you travel through the Town of Pocahontas, VA, and cross the old bridge, take a right on the Boissevain Road. Just a little further down you’ll see the Exhibition Mine Road, take another right. Now it’s just a short scenic drive until you make a left on state route 672.

You’ve made it. You’re now atop Peel Chestnut Mountain.

Edgar Shew https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/edgar-shew/ https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/edgar-shew/#respond Thu, 30 Sep 2021 14:09:16 +0000 https://ethanshew.com/?p=2242

Edgar Shew, simply put, was a Mountain Man and a legend on Peel Chestnut Mountain. He was an original and there will never be another like him again. He had many friends of all ages and all walks of life. Everyone, including his family, was fascinated by his personality, his speech, and his stories of his experiences. There was always a steady flow of visitors to the Shew Homeplace on the top of Peel Chestnut Mountain.

It is our hope to share some of the experiences, sights, and kinship to Edgar Shew on this website. This page is a tribute, and a memorial, to him.

Edgar Shew was a true Mountain Man. He spent most of his time on Peel Chestnut Mountain in his bibbed overalls, pipe, and hat. He spent much of his time stacking firewood and placing fence posts. And of course, all of his fence posts were of locust wood.

Edgar Shew was a collector of anything and everything old. He owned a large collection of cowboy movie posters, a large collection of guns that were mostly colts, old movie cameras, silent films, license plates from many states, crosscut and hand saws, liquor bottles, Prince Albert Pipe Tobacco cans, old tools, and mining items, newspapers and magazines, and hundreds of books – mostly the cowboy variety such as books by Zane Gray. All of Edgar Shew’s collections are still intact, and it is hoped that they will be wanted in some Museum someday so that all may enjoy.

Edgar Shew was born on January 22, 1910, and lived on Peel Chestnut Mountain until his death in 1999. Although never married, he left behind scores of family and friends that miss him and the way that he lived his life.

Memories of Edgar

Brenda “Tater” Compton When Randy and I were married, we would ride the golf cart around the mountain sometimes at night. We would stop and check on Edgar whenever we saw a light on in the house. He would always welcome us. I loved hearing his stories from way back – cowboy stories. He was truly a piece of History and is still very sadly missed by all that knew him.

Charlie Shew I have very many fond memories of my great Uncle Edgar from the times we got together and watched silent westerns while he drank moonshine from a milk jug and I drank beer. There used to be “social gatherings” on Sundays when it was not uncommon to see up to ten friends stop by to discuss current news, and maybe drank a little beer. One memory that explains how much Edgar was loved by his friends and family was on my first Thanksgiving after moving here. I knew he was alone and did not want him to go without turkey so I drove down to Krogers and bought us a Thanksgiving dinner. I drove on up to Edgar’s and when I walked in his kitchen table was table was completely full of meals that his friends had brought over. That was one of the first times I realized how much the people of Pocahontas cared for Edgar.

Russell Synan https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/russell-synan/ https://pocahontashighschoolindians.com/russell-synan/#respond Thu, 30 Sep 2021 13:22:45 +0000 https://ethanshew.com/?p=2228

Russell Synan was a fixture of Pocahontas and a lifelong resident of Peel Chestnut Mountain. He was born at his homeplace on Peel Chestnut Mountain and lived there till his passing on July 26, 2020, at the age of 92.

Russell and his wife Pat hosted two of the largest activities in the area – The Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival and the Peel Chestnut Mountain July 4th Celebration.

For over 18 years, Russell and Pat have opened their home to 100s, even 1000s, of friends who come to enjoy the good food, good music, vendors, games, hayrides, pumpkins, fireworks, apple butter, and those world-famous fried bologna sandwiches.

But most of all they come to enjoy the fellowship and the friendship of Russell and Pat Synan at the Synan Homeplace.

Memories of the Synan Homeplace….
I just wanted to let you all know that I got real hungry when I started reading about the bologna sandwiches. Wish I had one to eat right now. Hope all is well and the only comment I wanted to make about the homeplace was to say that my favorite uncle lives there and I wish I was with him right now and of course his great wife Pat. You see the most fun I have ever had in life was the fun I had as a child working and playing on top of Peel Chestnut Mountain at the Synan homeplace!!!
